What is Western Herbal Medicine?
Herbal medicine is the oldest form of medicine. Medicinal plants contain an abundance of active constituents that synergistically work in the body to treat various conditions. Herbal medicine is especially beneficial as a preventative measure, strengthening and stimulating the body’s normal functions and gently restoring equilibrium, it is equally effective in treating chronic health conditions. Herbs can be prescribed and taken in various forms such as a tincture (an alcoholic extract of a herb), a tea, a capsule or topically as a cream, but there are also other forms. Herbs that are prescribed by your herbalist are specific to your individual requirements. Herbal medicine is personalised medicine.
In Western Herbal Medicine practice, you’re treated holistically; the aim is always to find out the root cause of the illness and not just provide symptomatic relief, as often happens in orthodox medicine. This also includes mindset. Herbal medicine can also offer symptomatic relief, although commonly, this is the start point of your holistic health journey. In Western Herbal Medicine a long-standing tradition is met by modern science, as more and more research is being done on medicinal plants. Herbal medicine, when taken correctly is safe and can be taken together with prescription medicine. A trained medical herbalist will always check that there are no interactions between your herbs and orthodox medicine.
What is a Medical herbalist?
A medical herbalist is a trained health professional, usually at the university level, with knowledge about physiology, anatomy and clinical skills. Western medical herbalists integrate conventional medical skills with the traditional use of plant medicine and the latest scientific knowledge of herbs. Herbalists take a thorough case history and will provide a holistic management plan that includes lifestyle and nutritional guidance specific to your needs. Western medical herbalists are trained to check herb-drug interaction and contraindications for the client’s safety. Medical herbalists are also trained to know their limits and make referrals to GP’s or other health professionals when appropriate.
